'He's got the whole world in his hands. He's got the whole wide world in his hands'
The Sun's passage into the sign of Cancer marks the beginning of the Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere and completes the planetary Grand Cross (which is not yet a Cardinal Grand Cross as Saturn is still in Virgo).
The summer beings heat and warmth - a protective blanket that nurtures growth - it encompasses, surrounds and penetrates to the very core - it can also be stifling. The Sun in Cancer is emotional and protective; it represents what feeds us - that place we return to for comfort and to regroup. It is the mother representation in the astrological dynamic and one of the four pillars of the chart - a root point, a place of heritage and history.
The image of the crab for the sign of Cancer shows it as a water dweller, a rider of tide and rhythm and depth. Crabs have soft innards and a tendency to hide and retreat, but with the necessary 'bite' required to support themselves. The hard shell covering the softness and the sideways movement's show a Sun in Cancer person as guarded and fiercely protective if they should be exposed to harshness that could damage their innate sensitivity. There is always a very strong parental dynamic at work and ruled by the Moon, an emotional life of rhythm and change.
The transiting Sun's movement here then is a time to gather together, to dig deep to the core of what feeds you - to find a better relationship to your own emotional condition. Does what you are bonded with support you well? If not then there is a need to gather in what does. A time for parenting, yourself and others - garnering a pillar of security and strength with which to continue the journeys of life.
