This represents a turning point in the path of Venus. Cancer is one of the four cardinal angles of the zodiac - the northern most point and astrologically it represents the root - the home, the place you return to for comfort - your heritage. Venus in Cancer is therefore a placement for consolidation of love. The image here is of a mother cradling her son and depicts the position very well - as does Ave Maria or the Virgin Mary. Venus in Cancer represents the nurturing qualities of love. Fresh from the 'chit chat' of being in Gemini she now wants to cuddle up to her lover, to blend emotionally, to support and provide warmth and security midst the harsh realities of daily life.
If you have this position natally then you may be someone who is very sensitive and self protective in matters of the heart - the Cancerian crab has a hard exterior to keep the rough seas and grit from damaging her soft and fleshy interior - it is also a protection mechanism to keep at bay those who have unwelcome intentions. Emotional fertility is extremely important to Venus in Cancer - it has such a depth, a rhythm and rather like the Ave Maria, is a reflection of nature herself - that cycle that we all spin around, the changing tides of the seas, the passages of the seasons and the stars and planets - the cycle of life and death.
It is at this point of the cycle then that our love natures need to wrap up - we can find comfort in our families, our roots and inheritance. We can find sustenance from drawing upon memories of the past - the cycles we have encountered previously - the little births and deaths that we all encounter in various disguises throughout life - consider how these waves of life have contributed to our story and how we may move next in this play. It can also be a time for our bodies - that vessel that stays with us - do we cherish it? Does it provide us with the love we need to get by? Venus in Cancer is similar to Venus in Taurus in this respect - except that Cancer is a cardinal sign, it initiates, perhaps in a sideways motion, but it does take action. Any action now to nurture our diet, our bodies and our relationships is the meaning of this time - those things that provide us with security and value.
It is quite probable that recently our love has taken quite a battering. The recent Taurus New Moon stressed Venus considerably and the Occultation of her by the Moon may also have contributed. The Cardinal Grand Cross is completed with transiting planets through Cancer and perhaps this stress (or opportunity) will continue. How to deal with this? Have a read of this poem by the master himself - Rumi.
The Root of the Root of Yourself by Rumi
Don't go away, come near.
Don't be faithless, be faithful.
Find the antidote in the venom.
Come to the root of the root of
your self.
Molded of clay, yet kneaded
from the substance of certainty,
a guard at the Treasury of Holy Light -
come, return to the root of the root of
your self.
Once you get hold of selflessness,
you'll be dragged from your ego
and freed from many traps.
Come to the root of the root of
your self.
You are born from the children of
God's creation,
but you have fixed your sight too low.
How can you be happy?
Come to the root of the root of
your self.
Although you are a talisman protecting
a treasure,
you are also the mine.
Open your hidden eyes
and come to the root of the root of
your self.
You were born from a ray of God's
majesty
and have the blessings of a good star.
Why suffer at the hands of things that
don't exist?
Come to the root of the root of
your self.
You are a ruby embedded in granite.
How long will you pretend it isn't true?
We can see it in your eyes.
Come to the root of the root of
your self.
You came here from the presence of
that fine Friend,
a little drunk, but gentle, stealing our
hearts
with that look so full of fire; so,
come, return to the root of the root of
your self.
Our master and host, Shamsi Tabrizi,
has put the eternal cup before you.
Glory be to God, what a rare wine!
So come to the root of the root of
your self.
