Jupiter and Uranus in Aries

'Toto - I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore....'

I have previously written about Uranus in Aries from a personal perspective.  Along with Pluto in Capricorn and Saturn in Libra (and anything transiting Cancer) these planets make the Cardinal Grand Cross.  Those articles were inspired for International Astrology Day, where many Astrologers wrote about 'how' we can work with such powerful transits.

Pluto and Uranus are generational planets - they camp in signs for such a long time that characterises periods in society, and the ones born at that time.  We have seen seven years of Uranus in Pisces - ageing populations that are growing, more and more radical divergent expressions of faith - there have been fascinating discoveries of the untapped life that exists in our oceans, and, with the final degree of Pisces, we see a catastrophic oil spillage.  It is perhaps very 'Uranus in Pisces' that the rescue voices I read about, the ones that have been putting their money into research and development of solutions to these drilling problems, are celebrities.

This leads me into another feature of the last seven years - that of the 'celebrity' culture and reality television genre where the dwindling young population (generally) are seeking to 'make it'.  Some of this of course, has been painfully tacky.  However, I do smile when I walk through my local town centre and see so many very young people busking, playing guitars and singing; expressing their creativity whilst not being afraid of the odd 'bum note'.

When Uranus was last in Aries from April 1927 to June 1934 a revolution took place in the film industry.  Many top stars of the silver screen at the time were 'chained' (very Piscean) to contracts with the big studios - contracts that were very unfavourable.  So...what did they do?  They hit back - realised they were the stars of the show and demanded more of a cut.  Many changes happened in the industry at the time - there were huge innovations already underway in sound, animation, colour - and the big studios had competition from smaller studios (as they were then) - many setup by the stars themselves.  There is a parallel here to the current state of our entertainment industry.

Uranus in Aries is the period for the independent filmmaker, the own label, the backstreet culture and sound - creativity that is innovative, quick - this is the hallmark of a Pisces to Aries transition - it's an extraordinary time to express artistically.  We can also see this dynamic at work in the current digital arena.  Much is freely available to download and some artists find this abhorrent, tantamount to theft and potentially damaging emerging talent.  Others view it differently - putting forward the notion that by embracing new media they have significantly enhanced their exposure and sales.  The prolific and hugely successful writer Paulo Coelho allegedly published free translations of his books and was forced to come to a compromise agreement with a not too happy publisher!

This theme of new ground, new technology, innovation and discovery will colour the next seven years.  The planet of expansion, Jupiter, comes into conjunction with Uranus in Aries on 8th June 2010, 19th September 2010 and 4th January 2011 with the first conjunction in Aries and the rest in Pisces.  As if Uranus in Aries wasn't big enough of a firecracker the conjunction with Jupiter is rather like a whole city of fireworks going off!

All of this of course is quite explosive and potentially damaging.  The cosmos however affords us the Cardinal Grand Cross to reign in that spoilt child within and keep it from harm.  This 'cross', much like the symbol for earth in Astrology will ensure that real and lasting change will occur - the kind that benefits everyone in the long run.  The story of Paulo Coelho and his compromise with his publishers is a pertinent one with this Grand Cross - give and take, partnership, accepting the reality of a little pain to establish better futures.  These are all catalysts to the very 'real' potential creativity that can be accomplished at this time.
