Today the Sun and Moon Square each other. This is a 90 degree angle of challenge that happens twice in any lunar phase from New Moon to full, and back to new again.
What began at the Taurus New Moon is now under stress - at this first quarter we see the Sun at 29 degrees Taurus and the Moon at 29 degrees Leo - both about to enter new signs. We also see the Sun at the apex of a T-Square - it is both Squared by the Moon and by Neptune/Chiron in Aquarius - this compounds the tension - there is a fixed and stubborn quality about the luminaries - they both seek a way out but cannot find the space - they also know that it will soon change.
The lunar opposition to Neptune/Chiron brings disillusion and vagueness, but also opportunity - the chance to feel your way through it and in so doing, get a sense of the passage and motion of life's sway. In fact, there is an approaching Sextile of the Moon with Venus and Trine with Pluto and Mercury, and here lies the gift of this first quarter moon - to feel the depth and motion of change - to embrace it, but not to hold onto it - like watching fruit ripen. Here is a poem I wrote about such feelings - watching the empty spaces.
I am still a child
Running in the sand, with others
Crying and laughing
I grow, and stay the same
Where is my original face?
But now I know 10,000 deaths, and births
With each death, the birth is sweeter
The last fruit is the ripened one
My face is in the dawn and the dusk
No longer shall I cry, but rejoice
And wait for the fruit once more
As the Sun ripens the Moon
And withers it
The space in between is my toy
And I play with it.
