Astrology of Relating

Considering this weekends Full Moon in Aries the Astrology of Relating seems topical - it is also the number 1 question asked of an astrologer - which sign am I compatible with!  This is a question which is never easily answered as everyones chart is unique and contains the qualities of every sign of the zodiac.  However, your sun sign is the leading light in your chart and shows the expression of your true self so is worth exploring in terms of how it relates to other signs.

Firstly, every sign is associated with an element - these elements are Fire (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) and Water (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces).  Fire signs are opposite Air signs and Earth signs are opposite Water signs.  The element of a sign refer to its archetypal mode of expression - Fire is intuition and spirit, Air is logic and communication, Earth is tangible sensation and Water is feeling and emotion.

The pattern can almost be classified in 2 ways - either opposite or dissociate as follows:

Fire Signs - Air (Opposite), Earth (Dissociate)
Air Signs - Fire (Opposite), Water (Dissociate)
Water Signs - Earth (Opposite), Fire (Dissociate)
Earth Signs - Water (Opposite), Air (Dissociate)

A pattern now begins to emerge.  For instance, your relationship to your opposite sign is clear - there is a clash but it is out in the open, it's obvious that a balance is necessary for relating.  Your relationship to a dissociate sign will express itself in a less obvious manner - you may be more 'off key' with each other - integration is more difficult to achieve because the clash is not open.

Working and relating with people of a dissociate element as their sun sign can be the greatest challenge but also offers the greatest prospect for growth and understanding as follows:

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius can root and stablise their spirit and intuition from the grounded and sensory experiences of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.


Gemini, Libra and Aquarius can learn to communicate with depth, relatedness and feeling of the human condition from Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.


Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn can enrich and breathe life into sensory and practical experience from the ideas and movement of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.


Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces can find true positive spirit amidst their depth of feeling from the expressive Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.


A true analysis of relationship potential involves many more factors too complicated for this post - however, the general rule of thumb is that same elements signs relate well, opposite element signs have potential conflict and attraction in equal measure and dissociate signs offer the most challenge and potential growth.
