Well, following my last post this week's Computer Weekly goes into more depth with an interesting article exploring Microsoft's green strategy. Dubbed 'Generation Datacentres' they are apprantly at version 2 with their Dublin facility using outside air all year round apart from one or two days. Generation 3 is being designed now but it was the Generation 4 concepts I liked - datacentres with no roof....that's right, I had to read it twice too. Apprantly a roof is unnecessary - Microsoft's Michael Manos quotes "How much energy goes into making concrete, the fuel of the construction vehicles and how can we build datacentres with less building?"
This does seem a little absurd but i'm guessing they are using the brainstorming/creative thinking approach of starting with nonsensical concepts and working backwards - eventually arriving at a solution you may not have come up with if you'd thought the other way around.
The growing advent of cloud computing (services delivered over the internet) does mean bigger server farms and datacentres so it's nice to know they are thinking and doing something about the green agenda. Of course, the cynic could point to corporation posturing when the reality is somewhat different.
Apprantly they do not yet have any plans to charge customers for their energy consumption....
