Considering this blog is Astrology, IT and eLearning it's about time I started discussing eLearning. I've been playing with some portable applications today and I have to say it's the best thing since sliced bread! So....what exactly are portable applications I hear you cry! Well, they are applications that can be installed and run exclusively from a USB Memory Stick - nothing need be installed on the host PC or Laptop - it all runs from the stick. If you browse to http://www.portableapps.com you can see the enormous range of applications available to you. Everything is free and open source. I currently have the following running on my memory stick: A Web Browser, Email Client, Diary Tool, Anti-Virus Program, MP3 Player, Video Player, Backup Program, Encryption Program, Password Manager, Instant Messaging Client, Office Tools (word processor, spreadsheet, presentation package, database) and games. Pretty much everything you'd need! All of these applications run from a very nice main menu which minimises to the taskbar and run surprisingly quickly too.
So..is there a downside? Well, I guess the majority of IT departments will prevent executable programs being run from portable media as part of their security policy and all of these are executable programs. But...it's a very handy little tool to have in your pocket nonetheless.
